Foundational Activities

(e.g. Arabic phonics, short surahs, audio-visual learning)

In order to learn the Qur'an, we first need to  build a strong foundation in several aspects. Qur'anic learning requires a grasp of the Arabic language, basic knowledge of how the Qur'an is composed and some familiarity with its contents.

At Nur, we achieve this introduction to qur'anic learning through fun, interactive lessons and activities, using a variety of audio-visual resources. This allows for students to experience and develop an understanding of some of the shorter 'surahs' of the Qur'an, which can then build up to wider reading.

At Nur, we understand that all students are unique, and some may not benefit optimally from traditional methods of just 'rote learning'. For this reason, we tailor our dynamic teaching to a wider range of learning styles.

Recitation Practice

(e.g. tajweed, tilaawah, focused letter pronunciation)

'Recite' (iqra/اقرأ) was the first word of the Qur'an to be revealed, and essentially the first commandment of Islam. Recitation of the Qur'an is therefore a fundamental aspect of Islamic practice and should be a regular habit within our daily lives.

The linguistic rules with which we read the Qur'an are known as Tajweed, which literally means 'proficiency' - or doing something right. As Muslims believe the Qur'an is the word of God, it is incredibly important that we not only try to read it often, but also recite it correctly.

Nur aims to help students achieve this proficiency through direct, feedback-driven practice with qualified and experienced reciters.

Qur'anic Knowledge

(e.g. prophetic stories, Islamic concepts, quranic etiquettes)

Reading and reciting the Qur'an is incredibly important, but what exactly are we reading? What do these poetic verses and lengthy stories mean? Why are they important?

Nur facilitates lessons and discussions that focus on answering these questions. It's often useful to have a scholar explain the meanings behind quranic stories and provide further detail about what we might learn from them. Furthermore, in a discussion or study circle - there are always lots of opportunities to experience a wealth of different views and ideas on a subject, as each member contributes their own thoughts.

Nur teaches qur'anic knowledge across various levels and abilities - from the fundamentals of wudhu, to the philosophy of qadr!
